Digital Mammography Diagnostic Imaging (Radiology)Services

A mammogram is a test that utilizes x-rays to look through breast tissue. A normal screening mammogram usually involves two x-rays of each breast. For some patients, additional pictures may be needed during the screening to include as much breast tissue as possible. A diagnostic mammogram, on the other hand, looks at a specific area for a specific reason. It may be that something was found through a self examination, a doctor's examination or an annual screening.

What a Mammogram Shows

There are many things that may show up on a mammogram, including but not limited to:

Calcifications: Small mineral deposits that appear as small white spots on the films.
Mass: Masses can be due to many things, including cysts.
Cyst: This is a benign collection of fluid in the breast, that cannot be diagnosed by physical exams alone nor can it be diagnosed by mammography alone. To confirm that a mass is a cyst, either breast ultrasound or aspiration with a needle is required. If a mass is not a cyst, then further imaging may be necessary. As with calcifications, a mass can be caused by benign breast conditions or by breast cancer. Some masses can be monitored with periodic mammography while others may require immediate or delayed biopsy. The size, shape and margins of the mass help the radiologist in evaluating the likelihood of cancer.

During the Test

At Sebastian River Medical Center, women are first asked to complete a questionnaire about past and/or current breast problems, previous breast cancer treatment, family history, etc.

The patient then enters a private dressing area and changes into a gown. Then, the mammographer performs a visual exam looking for outward signs of disease or anything that the physician or radiologist should be aware of. The patient then stands up to the x-ray equipment while each breast is compressed for several seconds and top- and side-view films are taken. Then the exam is over, and the results should be returned within a week.
